When farmers want to grow a high-grade crop, they don’t simply throw seeds onto the ground and hope for the best. Rationale
The health of the planet and those who rely most on its rural integrity have an increasing influence on how investments are made or indeed if they are allowed to be made at all.
Many of the frontier and emerging states are resource rich but also eager to avoid the “resource curse”, a consequence of the paradox of plenty. Many of these countries with an abundance of natural resources such as fossil fuels and minerals are burdened with poor economic growth, democracy challenges, infrastructure needs and lower development potential than countries with fewer natural resources. They need a solution that will assist the sustainable growth of their nations and support their populations without “killing the goose that laid the golden egg”.
International investors and companies see the potential in these same frontier and emerging economies but are apprehensive due to existing levels of economic, political, social, and now even health related risk. Reputational risks are also heightened, alongside threats to the security of companies’ licence to operate and ability to deliver on the ground in the face of rapidly changing circumstances and in many cases the presence of disenfranchised local communities, poor governance (real or perceived) and/or other destabilising forces.
All sides are seeking a way forward. A proactive solution to these hybrid threats lies in a new formulated and holistic type of investing, which identifies and manages non-financial as well as financial influences and provides sustainable growth through enhancing greater human and environmental stability.
